Powering Scottsboro Since 1939

The Scottsboro Electric Power Board (SEPB) has proudly served the community of Scottsboro, Alabama, for more than eight decades. Created to oversee the city’s power system, SEPB is committed to providing reliable power and modern connectivity to city residents and businesses. As a municipal corporation made of neighbors serving neighbors, SEPB has grown and evolved alongside the community it powers.

Early Beginnings

In late 1939, we connected our very first customer to Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) power; this marked the start of an enduring partnership with the largest public power company in the United States.

SEPB was given complete authority and responsibility for all aspects of the city’s power system, including construction, operation, maintenance, and administrative control.

Growth and Expansion

As Scottsboro grew, so did we. The SEPB has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of our community, and our commitment to innovation and service has led us to expand our offerings well beyond basic power:

  • In 1998, we built a hybrid fiber coax network to offer telecommunications to our first cable customers.

  • In May 1999, we connected our first internet customer to become the first and only fiber provider in the area.

  • In 2008, we expanded to offer telephone services and connected our first phone line customer.

  • Serving more than 8,500 business and residential customers

  • Maintaining 275 miles of transmission lines

  • Providing a full suite of utility services, including electricity, internet, FTTH, and telephone

At SEPB, we are proud of our past and excited about the future as we continue to meet the evolving needs of our community. As a fiber provider in Scottsboro, we continue to invest in cutting-edge technology to ensure our community stays connected and powered for the future. Our partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) allows us to offer elements of the Energy Right program, further demonstrating our commitment to efficient and responsible energy use.

From construction and operation to maintenance and administrative control, the SEPB remains dedicated to powering Scottsboro’s progress, just as we have for 85 years.
